Communication off the Rails: Departmental Seminars

Even though The Walt Disney Company employs thousands, executives know that it is each one of those thousands of people who make a difference in the company, and we need to be as informed as possible in order to be successful. Disney schedules small, informal seminars within each department to communicate to cast members what we need to do in order to embody the company and be “show-ready.”

The first meeting I was scheduled for was a Disney College Program Welcome Event within the transportation department. The seminar was ran by two transportation Leaders. Since there are only 16 monorail College Program participants total, the meeting was also combined with watercraft participants. Monorails and watercraft go hand-in-hand when it comes to Disney transportation, so we used this seminar to get to recognize and know each other a little better in case of necessary reliance. For example, if the ferryboats are not in operation, watercraft operators have to communicate with us to ensure that monorails are operational, and guests can then be sent to the monorails instead of taking the ferryboats.

We also discussed advancement within the company. Disney College Program participants have the opportunity to do the program again if we choose, and we can opt to do a Disney Professional Internship as well within our field of study. Sometimes it appears that once Disney gets you here, there is no turning back, and they will wrangle you to stay forever. Although they want you to stay, every Leader says the same three words: finish school first. A degree is crucial to success at Disney.

The second meeting I recently attended was a “4 Keys” class. During this seminar, transportation cast members discussed the importance of our guidelines to guest satisfaction with one another. We had to act out real guest situations and describe the best way to handle each situation we could hypothetically come across. This way, we will be more prepared if a really unique or difficult situation arises. Examples include sick or lost guests.

Learning at Disney does not stop at training. Each day on the job, there is something new to be experienced. Disney has recognized this and wants each cast member to be ready for anything along the way.
