Once upon a time, there was a large wooden roller coaster. Created by the Dinn Corporation, it was a massive structure with many dips and turns. In fact, it was the tallest and fastest wooden coaster in the world at 161 ft tall and 65 mph in 1991. From the outside, it looked incredible. It looked like an intense ride that maybe you’d save for your prime attraction to add to your Roller Coaster Tycoon park.
This roller coaster was the Mean Streak at Cedar Point. A person who had never ridden the coaster could be easily fooled by the impressive-looking wooden ride, but one ride was enough to reveal the truth. Instead of living up to its image, Mean Streak lived up to its name in the worst way possible. Wooden coasters are meant to shake and rattle, but this one left you feeling sick for the rest of the day. In a way, that is what roller coasters are meant to do. The Beast at Cedar Point’s sister, Kings Island, leaves you sore and with a headache as well. The difference with Mean Streak was that the ride was just bad. The layout was uninteresting and left you with 0 airtime. Trim brakes lined the entire initial drop, and the brake run in the middle nearly stopped the train. It was just like Cedar Creek Mine Ride, which is actually more enjoyable than Mean Streak ever was. It was a waste of a massive amount of wood, and park goers were fully aware. Even on the busy days, Mean Streak was never above a 10-minute wait.
Cedar Point was aware of Mean Streak’s unlikeable ride and shut it down in September 2016. In 2017, Rocky Mountain Construction vehicles and tracking began to appear at the former Mean Streak site. Cedar Point announced on National Roller Coaster Day, August 16th of 2017, that RMC would be creating the world’s first hyper-hybrid (coaster that is over 200 ft with a steel track and wooden structure). Some of Mean Streak’s old wooden structure would be used and fit to support a new, steel track. Thus, Steel Vengeance was born.
Steel Vengeance breaks numerous amounts of records aside from being the world’s first hyper-hybrid coaster. It is the tallest, fastest, and longest hybrid ever built at 205 ft, 74 mph, and 5,740 ft. It has the most inversions on any hybrid coaster at 4. Then, there’s the best part…it has not only the most airtime on a hybrid at 27.2 seconds, but the most airtime on any coaster in the world. Take that, Mean Streak.
To market the coaster, Cedar Point used the hashtag #They’reComing. Who is “they,” you ask? CP released a trailer that Steel Vengeance is the production of two cowboys and a cowgirl, Blackjack, Digger, and Chess, who have come to reclaim the area that prosperous Maverick had disregarded in the wild west, or Frontiertown.
Steel Vengeance opened to amazing reviews by the media and passholders during the passholder nights. During opening weekend, however, an incident occurred on opening day where Digger and Chess, two of the trains named after the outlaws, collided in the station due to a brake malfunction at extremely low speeds. No one was hurt, but the ride was shut down for most of the day and reopened at night.
On Sunday of opening weekend, Steel Vengeance was open, but was only operating with the Chess train and continued to malfunction sporadically. Due to the high volume of people wanting to ride and the situation at hand, Cedar Point only allowed for early entry platinum passholders, Fast Lane, and a few general admission who had boarding passes for specific times into the queue.
The Theme Park Doctor admins were able to go to the park on Sunday and ride Steel Vengeance after a 4.5 hour queue because of one-train operations and a 2-hour long malfunction.

As much as I love rides and roller coasters, I’ve never been a person that will wait in a long queue for them. Adam and I have mastered the Cedar Point queues, since we’ve been to the park over 30 times as Cedar Fair Platinum Passholders. We know what ride waits will be shorter at what times. Since Steel Vengeance was the only coaster in the park that we hadn’t ridden and it looked incredible, we told each other that we’d wait for it no matter what, especially since I’m going to work as a cast member at Walt Disney World for the summer and I won’t have another chance to ride until the fall. Although we didn’t expect to wait 4.5 hours, it was completely worth it, and I’d wait that long again. Although I still love Millennium Force, Steel Vengeance is my new favorite roller coaster. The restraints are comfortable for this type of ride, with a lap bar, seatbelt, and leg pads. The smoothness of the hills make you feel like you are floating in air, but at the same time, the twists, turns, and sudden drops combined with the speed allow for an exciting ride. The four barrel rolls come out of nowhere. It’s non-stop action. It’s everything a roller coaster should be.

Steel Vengeance is an epic ride, and Theme Park Doctor readers are encouraged to go to Cedar Point in 2018 if they can. Although the ride was off to a rocky (no pun intended) start, the issues will most likely be solved.
